New Jerusalem Bible Roman Catholic translation with very good scholarship and language that I would characterize as clear and direct, if unpoetic. The footnotes are very good.
New Revised Standard Version This is the latest incarnation of the King James - it retains some of the phraseology and rhythms of the King James, but is very readable, has good footnotes, and is well-researched. Remember to get the Apocrypha.
New International Version This is the version we use in our liturgy, and is written in a clear, forthright style. Probably the most obviously Protestant of the three. Remember to get the Apocrypha.
Bible Study
Who Wrote the Bible? Richard Friedman Where did the Old Testament come from? Who actually wrote most of it? Very readable book by a respected Biblical scholar, has the format of a mystery.
